Removing barriers - the basics
Self awareness
• Do your values and beliefs impact on your communication?
• What you say and how you behave will influence others.
• You are a key role model.
Listening and questioning techniques
• Are you getting the most out of these everyday activities?
• Generally taken-for-granted but they are the cornerstone of probably most of
your communication.
Non-verbal behaviour
• You’ll have noticed other people’s non-verbal behaviour e.g. eye contact,
gestures, tone of voice, use of silence. Have you taken time to reflect on what
you commonly do?
Other people’s needs and perspectives
• Support equality and diversity
• Respect other people’s ideas, values and principles
• Ensure people’s dignity and rights when overcoming barriers to communication

Communication methods
Take a moment to consider the strengths and weaknesses of
your preferred method(s) of communication from this list.
• Face-to-face (individual, groups)
• Email
• Telephone
• Written (letters, memos)
• Increasing use of virtual meetings e.g. MS Teams
What do you do to minimise the weaknesses?
A common solution is to use more than one method –
especially for important messages or to different groups of

staff.
