Strategic Leadership in K-12 School Districts

Introduction
Participants will examine how different leadership styles impact a school district's strategic direction.
Each participant will explore the relationship between leadership styles and strategic leadership. Strategic
leaders' characteristics will be researched and identified to help the learner develop and articulate their
leadership style.
A range of assigned readings and practical assignments have been planned to help you achieve the
course's identified objectives as outlined.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this course, you should be able to accomplish the following objectives:
• Examine and identify leadership styles that influence strategic leadership abilities.
• Describe the research and theories (e.g., authors & theories you have read about in this course)
that will contribute to your personal or professional development.
• Apply knowledge of leadership styles and characteristics of successful leaders.
• Describe how these theories have impacted your learning and how you will use them to influence
your leadership abilities.
Course Requirements/Assignments
Students will provide evidence, in a portfolio format, due after the course by completing the following
assignments:
• Complete a Reflections Paper summarizing the leadership theories you have learned about in this
module. (30 points)
• Complete a final summary report from Two Interviews with Community Leaders. (30 points)
• Complete a Leadership Essay identifying the theoretical and philosophical underpinnings of your
leadership style. (40 points)
Lesson 1: Leadership Overview and Reflection Paper (5 hours) 30 points

• Read Situational Leadership Brief
• Complete a Reflections Paper (3-4 pages) summarizing the leadership theories you have learned
in this module. Summaries should include lessons learned by comparing and contrasting these
theories and their relationship to your leadership understanding. The reflection paper should
include a cover page and any appropriate citations for references used to support your
perspective.
Lesson 2: Leader Interviews (5 hours) 30 Points
• Watch Lesson Overview Video
• Each student will identify and interview two community leaders and complete a Final Summary
Report (3-4 pages), including each interview's results. End your "written" report with a reflection
of how conducting these two "sit-down" interviews with leaders impacts you as a leader and how
you can use this information in your professional development. One of the interviews must be
with someone in an educational leadership position. The final summary paper should include:
1. Name of the leader interviewed
2. Leaders job title
3. Date of the interview
4. Baseline questions shall include but are not limited to, the following:
a. Please tell me of your professional and academic background and how you happened to
become involved with (the organization they work for).
b. How would you define leadership?
c. Please describe for me what you feel are the qualities of an effective leader.
d. Who were leaders that impacted your life's journey, and what was it about them that
inspired you?
e. How would you describe your leadership style?
f. How would you describe your mission and vision for your (building, district,
department, organization)? What is the difference between the two?
g. How do you motivate those that work for you?
h. How do you manage conflict when it arises within your organization?
i. How would you describe the culture of your organization?
j. How do you promote a positive climate within your organization?
k. How are decisions made within your organization?
Lesson 3: Leadership Essay (6 hours) 40 points

• Each student will complete a leadership essay (3-4 pages) outlining addressing the following
components:
1. Define leadership – specifically develop your definition.

2. Describe the research and theories (e.g., authors & theories you have read about in this
course or others) that have contributed to your development as an educational leader.
3. Describe how these theories have impacted your life and how you have used them to
influence your school or organization positively.
4. How would you describe yourself as a leader? What are the leadership skills and
capabilities you tend to use?
5. What do you feel are your leadership strengths and weaknesses?
6. Conclude your leadership Essay with a statement of your personal career goals.
• The reflection paper should include a cover page and any appropriate citations for references
used to support your perspective.
Course Blackboard Site: Participants will use the UND Blackboard System to support the structure of
the course.
Grading and Evaluation:
Grading for this course – Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory. Participants will need to complete all required
module activities, complete, and submit written reports earning 60 or more points to obtain a Satisfactory
grade.
60-100 - Satisfactory
Below 59 - Unsatisfactory
Upon completion of your course, your final grade will be posted in Blackboard. Please allow 3-5 business
days for your final grade to appear on your transcript in Campus Connection. You will receive a
confirmation email when the final grade is officially posted on your transcript.
