Cover Letter for an Internship in
Journalism
I. Elements to consider when writing this letter
Journalism is a field that appeals to many people nowadays, primarily through the heavy impact
that it has on our lives through newspapers, magazines, blogs and the internet. Although many
journalists are self-employed, experience in an established media institution can provide a lot of
credibility to one’s career, helping to bring their work to a larger readership and an internship
can be an excellent way to start.
Places for internships in journalism are competitive and therefore it is vital that your cover
letter set your application apart from others, along with your CV and portfolio.
Skills such as a strong work ethic, a curious nature and an eye for detail are important to
mention as they are vital for the work of a journalist, who has to stay up to date on current
trends and situations and present all the information accurately and concisely.
Furthermore, giving information of any published articles or experience in journalism, through
blogs, article contributions or editing of high-school or university newspapers will not fail to
impress the person reading your cover letter.

Re: Internship in Journalism.
Dear Hiring Manager,
I am writing to you to apply for the six-month internship position that has become available at
your organisation. I heard that the position became available from my lecturer, Dr Simon Brown
at Nottingham University. I am currently in my final year of my degree in Journalism and the
opportunity of completing an internship with such a well establish media institution such as
yourself, would be very valuable for my career progression and I would relish the opportunity to
show you what I can do, whilst also gaining valuable skills and knowledge from your journalists.
My studies have required me to complete training periods throughout the course, on top of this
I have also been doing some freelance journalism for an on-line magazine about travel. You can
see in my attached CV the articles in which I have had published.
I am an enthusiastic individual, highly focussed and organised. During my previous internships I
have gained valuable experience in various aspects of journalism, including researching, writing
and editing articles on Travel, Sport, Music and International cuisine. I have a keen eye for detail,
not only in my written work but I also take many of my own photographs. Through my work with
the on-line magazine, I have been able to increase my leadership skills through project work
whilst also being highly proficient working independently.
Your organization has an excellent reputation for the development of journalists; I am sure that
we can build a strong relationship together, where I can make positive contributions to your
paper and also being able to hone my skills from my peers.
I am available at your convenience for further discussion about any role which you may have
available for me and how I can be of benefit to your company. Please feel free to contact me if
you require any further information. Thank you for taking the time to look over my application
and I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours sincerely
