• A business case is the primary document
used to articulate the alternatives for a
proposed expenditure on real property
• Two basic types of business cases:
–Real Property action
–Facility modification/repair/construction

Purpose
• The overriding purpose of a business case is
to make transparent to the decision-making
entities the objectives to be met by a real
property action or a facilities investment.
• A good business case provides
documentation to make a well informed
decision.
Required Elements
• Accurate – An effective business case should
state the facts. All meaningful costs and
benefits should be included and validated
against the best available data. Uncertainty
and intangible factors should be captured
and stated.
