       REGISTERED APPRENTICESHIP WORKS!
       GTA’s perspective
                         Confidential & Proprietary
  Why did GTA participate?
 With privatization in 2005, GTA began transforming
itself: from government telephone company to a
     competitive technology company
 We need to give our employees the right tools to do their
job and training is at the top of that list
 In 2007, GTA sought to expand its current technical
training program to include opportunities from various
external facilitators to better equip its employees
  How did GTA Start?
 GTA learned of the Registered Apprenticeship Program
through a pamphlet handed out at a Job Fair
 GTA partnered with Alfred Valles, former State Director,
Office of Apprenticeship for Hawaii and the Pacific
Region, along with Phyllis Topasna, Apprenticeship
Coordinator, in developing the standards of GTA
     Apprenticeship:
       Academic job-related instructional curriculum
       On-the-Job learning/training processes
  How did GTA Start?
 In 2008 GTA registered with the National Apprenticeship
System under the US Dept of Labor
 First enrollment: 50 Registered Apprentices; 2 approved
     occupations
       25 Telecom Technicians
       25 Line Installer-Repairers
 Occupations customized to meet our needs while
     fulfilling USDOL requirements
    What has transpired since?
 Since first class, we graduate about 50 apprentices/year
 We currently have 51 Registered Apprentices
 Approved occupations have since evolved from 2 to 11
maintaining enrollment at an average of 48 per year:
             Operating Engineer
             Telecommunications Technician
             Internetworking Technician
             Computer Operator
             Accounting technician
             Field Engineer
             Customer Service Representative
             Office Manager
             Salesperson Parts
 Successfully Audited by USDOL in 2012
