International COVID-19 Vaccination Certificate Frequently Asked Questions ABOUT What is the International COVID-19 Vaccination Certificate? The international certificate is a secure way of proving your COVID-19 vaccination history when travelling overseas. The international certificate has a secure QR code, and can be downloaded to an app, or printed. It links your information on the Australian Immunisation Register with your passport. The QR code can be read by passport control systems at borders around the world and by purpose-built apps, to authenticate your vaccination history. Why do I need an International COVID-19 Vaccination Certificate? When travelling overseas, the countries you’re visiting may require you to provide proof of your COVID-19 vaccinations and tests before they let you enter. The international certificate is a secure and trusted way to prove your COVID-19 vaccination history. As every country or territory decides who can enter or leave through its borders, you’ll still need to check that your COVID-19 vaccination meets the requirements of the countries you’re visiting. Who can get one? Anyone who has their COVID-19 vaccinations recorded on the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR), and has a valid passport, can get an international certificate. If you were vaccinated in Australia, your vaccinations will be automatically recorded on the AIR. If you were vaccinated overseas, you can ask your health professional to record your vaccination on the AIR once you return to Australia. This will allow you to get the international certificate. Tip: If you need proof of vaccination prior to your return to Australia, you can seek a vaccination certificate from the country in which you were vaccinated. How does my International COVID-19 Vaccination Certificate work? Your international certificate has a QR code that protects against forgery in the same way as the chip in your passport. The QR code conforms to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) worldwide standard for digital vaccination certificates. Just like your passport, border authorities can verify that your international certificate is true and unaltered by checking it against Australia’s ICAO certification credentials. I’ve got an international vaccine certificate issued by another country – do I still need to get the International COVID-19 Vaccination Certificate? This is the same technology as the chip in an Australian passport. GETTING YOUR INTERNATIONAL CERTIFICATE How do I get an International COVID-19 Vaccination Certificate? The easiest way to get your international certificate is by using your Medicare account through myGov, or the Medicare Express app. Before you request your certificate, you will need to have: had at least one COVID-19 vaccination, and a valid passport. What if I was vaccinated overseas? If you were vaccinated overseas, you will need to register your vaccination in the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) once you return to Australia. If you are an Australian visa holder, you can get your international certificate using your Medicare account through myGov, or the Medicare Express app. If you are not an Australian visa holder, you can get your international certificate by contacting Services Australia. page 3 of 6 When would I need to get a new International COVID-19 Vaccination Certificate? The international certificates don’t expire, but you will need to request a new one, if you: receive additional COVID-19 vaccinations intend to travel under a different passport number (for example you receive a new passport) You lose your international certificate. Tip: Some countries won’t recognise COVID-19 vaccinations administered longer than a specified number of days. Please check the individual rules for the countries you are intending to visit. What if I lose my International COVID-19 Vaccination Certificate? We recommend that you travel with a spare copy of your international certificate and leave a copy with a family member or trusted friend, in case it is lost or damaged on your journey. If you lose your international certificate, and you don’t have a spare copy, you will need to generate a new one through myGov or by contacting Services Australia. Tip: Follow the instructions on the myGov website to ensure that you still have access to your myGov account while travelling overseas. Can I get an International COVID-19 Vaccination Certificate if I’m not vaccinated? You can only get an international certificate if you’ve received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. If you haven’t received any doses, you should check the official government website of the country you’re travelling to for more information about COVID-19 vaccination exemptions. What if I don’t have a valid passport? You need to have a valid passport to apply for an International COVID-19 Vaccination Certificate. To apply for a new passport, or to renew your current passport, visit www.passports.gov.au. Tip: In some countries you need to have at least 6 months validity on your passport to enter, so it’s a good idea to check your passport’s expiry date before your travel. What if I hold multiple passports? If you have more than one passport (for example, as a dual-national), you will need to make sure that the passport details on your international certificate are the same as the passport you intend to travel with. If these details don’t match, you will need to request a new international certificate. What if my passport details are different to the details registered in Medicare? If your passport details are different to the details registered in Medicare, you will need to update them. You can do this using your Medicare online account.
