                                                               PAP PRECALCULUS
TEXT: Larson, Ron & Falvo, David: Precalculus with Limits. Houghton Mifflin
                       Company, 2015.
Prerequisites: Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra 2
Course Description: This course extends the analysis and understanding of functions
studied in Algebra 2 and also expands the student’s repertoire of functions to include
polynomial, rational, periodic, piecewise defined functions, conic and trigonometric
functions. Students will also study trigonometric functions and inverses, identities and
equations, as well as solve triangles and examine applications of trigonometric functions.
Additional topics studied include sequences and series, vectors, parametric equation,
polar coordinates and limits. Pre-Calculus Pre-AP is more rigorous and covers topics
with more depth than regular Pre-Calculus.
                       COURSE OUTLINE: Introduction to Trigonometry
                                                    Trigonometric Functions and Graphs
                                                    Trigonometric Equations, Identities, and Proofs
                                                          Vectors and Applications
                                                          Characteristics & Applications of Functions
Transformations, Compositions, and Inverses of Functions
                                                          Polynomial Functions and Applications

Exponential and Logarithmic Functions and Applications
                                                          Sequences and Series

SUPPLIES: Students are expected to bring these materials to class each day:
 Binder or Notebook for all class materials
                                 Completed homework assignment
                                 Pencils with erasers
                                 Graphing Calculator (TI-84, TI-84+, TI-84+C recommended)
                                         o (TI-89 and/or TI-Inspire are NOT ALLOWED on exams)
                                 Red pen for grading
 One Time: Choose one or more of the following if you are able to donate to
                                    the class.
                                         o A box of tissues

                       CLASS RULES:
                       1. Be prompt and prepared: We have many things to learn. It is important that you
come to class and that you are on time. You should come to class with your
notebook, something to write with, and the previous day’s assignment EVERYDAY.
                       2. Be polite: I expect you to respect those around you. We need to create an
environment in which everyone feels comfortable and feels free to ask questions.
                       3. Be productive: Use your class time wisely. I expect you to participate during
lessons and take advantage of any homework time to do your work.
                       4. Be positive: Give math a chance. Give yourself a chance. I can help you learn just
about anything. Don’t say, “I can’t do this.” Say instead, “I can’t do this, YET.”
                       5. Prepare your technology so the classroom is an excellent learning environment for
everyone. Technology TURNED OFF and STOWED AWAY until directed/allowed to
use the device(s) for educational purposes.
                       6. Follow school rules: All school rules will be followed according to the LTHS student
                           handbook (tardies, exemptions, etc.).
                       7. Check Schoology Daily: Class updates, schedules and assignments will be posted
on schoology. Information is subject to change so please sign up for alerts and check
                           frequently.

ALL SCHOOL RULES AND POLICIES WILL BE STRICTLY ENFORCED IN THIS
CLASS! (This includes tardy policy, HONOR CODE, cell phones, dress code,
make-up work, extracurricular absences etc.) YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR
KNOWING AND FOLLOWING THE STUDENT HANDBOOK!

                       GRADING:

 DAILY GRADES: Daily grades may consist of homework assignments, student
board presentations, quizzes (both pop quizzes and scheduled quizzes),
writing assignments, group work, etc. Students can expect to have a written
assignment on a daily basis, and several quizzes prior to each Unit Test.
 All assignments are due at the beginning of the next class period.
 ***NO LATE WORK IS ACCEPTED***
 One daily grade (homework or classwork assignment) will be dropped at the end
                                of each grading period.
 Tests: Students must complete all major tests and quizzes within the
allotted time. Students are not allowed to come back at another time to
                                finish a test or quiz.
 All assingments/assessments must show work at the level equivalent to
                                notes.
 No Retests are given in PAP Precalculus.
 If a student misses a Quiz, it will need to be made up before or after school
the next day so that quizzes can be returned to all students in a timely
manner. After that no makeup quizzes will be given. If the student is not
able to make up the quiz the next day, the test grade over that unit will be
used for the missing quiz grade. This is limited to once per test. Failure to
makeup a quiz the following day, in excess of the one replacement grade
for that test, will result in the missing quiz becoming a zero.
 A Midterm or Final Exam will be given at the end of each semester.

                       GRADE DETERMINATION:
Each Grading Period Average is computed as follows:
                            40% Daily Work Average
                                    o 10% Homework/Classwork
o 30% Quizzes (both scheduled and pop quizzes)
 60% Tests and Projects (There will be a minimum of 3 major grades)
Each Semester Grade will be computed as follows:
                     st
                     40% 1 Term Average
                     40% 2nd Term Average
                     20% Midterm or Final Exam
             MAKEUP WORK:
When absent, a student has one class (day) to makeup work for each class missed.
The student should check Schoology or come by before/after school to get the makeup
work and schedule with the teacher, if necessary, for tests or quizzes. When absent
only on the day of a test, the student is expected to take the makeup test during their
scheduled makeup time (typically two available, must schedule with teacher ahead of
time for one of these two time slots). School related absences are usually known in
advance, so the student should get the assignments that will be missed and schedule
any quizzes or tests before leaving school.
The school policy is as follows for make up work: (Please pay close attention to the
extracurricular absence expectations. The teacher can require that missed work is
completed ahead of time. For this reason it is CRUTIAL to complete a planned absence
form at least 3 days prior to an absence.)
