NEW MAJOR Language, Culture, and Society Pursue an interdisciplinary major that combines coursework in linguistics and anthropology Language, Culture, and Society majors will: Explore language use and variation across cultures and social contexts Obtain foundational knowledge in two disciplines, linguistics and anthropology Perform analyses of: o Language use and power Debuts o Language use and identity construction o Language structure and world view Fall 2020 o Discourse styles and social roles and relations o Cultural traditions and language arts Examine issues in bilingualism, multilingualism, language policy, and ideology Compare cultural systems through coursework focusing on particular cultures Develop expertise to address complex social problems in a globalized, pluralistic 21st-century world Major in Language, Culture, and Society if you are interested in pursuing: Applied careers in nonprofit associations, refugee organizations, cultural institutes, tech companies, and federal, state, local government, and international agencies Graduate work in anthropology, law, linguistics, and a variety of interdisciplinary areas in the social sciences cal.sdsu/language-and-culture Questions? Contact Rebecca Egipto at regipto@sdsu.edu or call (619) 594-5268 Language, Culture, and Society Major REQUIREMENTS Take classes now to prepare for Preparation: the major Linguistics 101 and Anthropology 102 (6 units) Major requires minimum of 33 units to include: Linguistics 300 Anthropology 303 Anthropology 410 Three units selected from Linguistics 420, 501, Anthropology 304 Nine units selected from Linguistics 483, 502, 526, 551 Three units selected from Linguistics 363 [or Africana Studies 363] or Linguistics 460 [or American Indian Studies 460 or Anthropology 460] Six units selected from Linguistics 350, 352, 354, Sociology 410, 412 Three units of a course focusing on a specific culture, from any department Language Requirement: Competency (successfully completing the third college semester or fifth college quarter) is required in one foreign language to fulfill the graduation requirements. Refer to section of catalog on “Graduation Requirements.” Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement: Pass the Writing Placement Assessment with a score of 10, or Linguistics 305W, or Rhetoric and Writing Studies 305W or 500W with a grade of “C” (2.0) or better.
